Millette + Tim
Where to event start with these two and their incredible day in Oaxaca! Tim & Millette’s Oaxaca wedding was filled with THE most joy I have ever witnessed, and also the most tears of love I have ever witnessed! I was an emotional wreck just like them and the rest of their family and friends and it was beautiful + amazing! I will be fully honest with you, before Millette and I started chatting about their day, I did not exactly know how to pronounce Oaxaca correctly. Of course, I didn’t realize it wasn’t correct, because who ever does haha. So, if there is anyone else out there saying it as “OH-ex-aca” or “OX-aca” then you’re not alone haha. The correct pronunciation is “wa-HA-ka.”
Another thing that was new for me was traveling to the central part of Mexico. I had only ever traveled to the coast and so many times, like I think a lot of people have. This was a new adventure for me and I was extremely excited! Exploring new places has always been one of my favorite parts of traveling for weddings! Traveling to places where seeing locals around you is more prominent than seeing tourists is just not that common anymore, but Oaxaca City was one of those places. I brushed up on more of my Spanish in the 4 days we were there than I ever have traveling to Mexico or other Spanish speaking countries. When a place is a prominent tourist destination, many of the locals speak English, and therefore you aren’t forced to try. In Oaxaca City you had no choice but to speak Spanish and I absolutely loved it!
Leading up to Tim and Millette’s day I knew it was going to be so full of little details and activities that just embraced who they are! I can’t think of a single individual detail or action that wasn’t well-thought out and meaningful to them, their loved ones, or their backgrounds in some way shape or form. The ceremony was full of so many traditions and different cultures mixed together to form the perfect recipe of them. I could never even begin to explain all the thoughtful details as well as Millette could though. Read about their day in Millette’s own words on their travel blog, The Next Somewhere!
The day we arrived in Oaxaca was a tell all in itself! It was clear that 50% of the people traveling into Oaxaca that day were for the wedding it seemed. There was only one flight a day from Dallas. So when they changed my flight a few months before by 9 hours, there weren’t other flight options haha I just had to accept it! Colton & I had gotten in 2 days early because the evening before Tim & Millette’s wedding they were throwing a calenda! A Calenda is a Oaxaca tradition where they parade through the streets with music, dancers, and giant puppets resembling the couple to celebrate them! It was one of the most fun things we have ever photographed and Videoed! After the parade was over we went to these late night food market stalls that were sooooo good!
The morning of the wedding day was beautiful weather! Millette got ready at this stunning hotel in the middle of the square and then we traveled to another location she had specially chosen for their first look + photos! Soon after we concluded photos it was beginning to look like rain was moving in. The ceremony was set to be on the top deck of the hotel by the pool and pool bar, and there was a break in the rain long enough that we all figured it had passed and we were going to forge ahead. Well, as soon as the ceremony began it started raining again, but we were in it! The light rain was no problem at first as the ceremony began, then a little bit later it begin to pour. Guests quickly ran under the pool bar awning, everyone was laughing, snuggling closer together under umbrellas, and embracing it! The ceremony went on anyways and it was magical! This was the first time that I realized that this was going to be one of my all-time favorite memories from a wedding! Everything planned and prepped flew out the window & it was just loved ones huddled, standing closer together, and everything just felt even more intimate than ever especially when Millette’s grandmother began singing and making every single person cry while a kind groomsmen held an umbrella over our cameras! The guests had been watching up at them from the pool bar and then towards the end of the ceremony Tim & Millette decided to join them in the pool bar area to finish the rest! So because their was no aisle or structure anymore, the “I now pronounce you husband and wife” turned into an epic celebration of jumping and dancing with all their people! Under an awning, in the rain, in a place so special to them! All of this just goes to show you x100 that the best memories come from the unplanned moments!
At their reception, the laughter and tears continued and so did the rain, but everyone was dry under a tent and the evening was magical! Another favorite moment from the day was Millette dancing with her brother in memory of her father and it was unbelievably emotional; witnessing the tears from her sweet grandmother and ever single guest. The rest of the night was a dance party like no other! My only regret is going to sleep before the churros came out hahah. It was such an honor to be a part of Tim & Millette’s Oaxaca Wedding day!
Now that I’ve written a million words, I’ll let my images tell the story finally.
